Getting a baby to fall asleep and stay asleep is not an easy task.Babies typically require 14-17 hours of sleep per day during their first year. But getting a baby to fall asleep and stay asleep is not an easy task - newborns often need to be comforted by light motions such as rocking, bouncing, or the calming feeling of being driven around the block. While this care is comforting for a restless child, it is effort-intensive and unsustainable for a sleep-deprived new parent. |
While a few common bouncing motions will be pre-programmed, parents can also demonstrate any personalized sequence to Cocoon by manually pushing on the bassinet. This unique movement pattern with 3 degrees of freedom is then digitally saved and automatically repeated in response to the child’s cries.
Cocoon’s speaker and rocking actuation is controlled by an audio feedback loop that listens to a child’s cries, and learns, based on the child’s response, the most optimal bouncing and sound combination for a given child. A companion digital interface is included in the Cocoon smart crib, allowing parents to be notified of their child's sleeping or crying behavior real-time. |
Cocoon emphasizes the comfort and safety of the child, prioritizing the optimal design for smooth, calming movements and stability of construction. The exterior design of the bassinet will seamlessly integrate into the family’s home, looking clean, simple, and inviting by hiding the technology inside an intuitive exterior interface.
The customizability of the product helps harness the parent-child relationship by creating a way for parents to record and “replay” familiar, comforting movements that work best for their child. The goal of this product is to improve the quality of life for the parent, including less late night drives through town or hours of rocking and cooing the child to sleep. By creating an affordable product that aims to replicate the human experience of putting a baby to sleep, we hope to augment a new parent’s life with the use of this well-designed and user-centered product. |
